Stephanie and Steven Lee spend most summer weekends at the lake with their dog, Otis. Re-applying sunscreen every 90 minutes is always a part of their fun in the sun.

Stephanie Lee, Cornerstone Dermatology Nurse Practitioner, seeks solace at the lake on summer weekends, but the sun hasn’t made its mark on her skin, thanks to vigilant protection while boating and playing on the water. If anything, her love for lake life offers an opportunity to practice what she preaches to her patients, as well as the chance to put many brands of sunscreen to the test.

Due to recent findings that sunscreen ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream, Lee generally prefers for herself and recommends mineral-based sunscreens (versus chemical ones) to her patients.

“Look for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as a few of the primary ingredients in mineral-based sunscreens,” Lee advises. “These sunscreens provide a physical barrier between your skin and harmful UVA/UVB rays.”

We all have different skin types, so it’s important to find a few sunscreens that best suit the unique needs of your skin, your budget and your lifestyle, Lee says.

If quick and easy application is an important factor for you, that could mean selecting a stick or aerosol spray.

If you’re seeking sun protection with the added benefit of evening out skin tone, many women (and men!) appreciate a sunscreen with a universal tint.

And if you have acne-prone skin, it’s important to select a sunscreen that is clearly labeled as oil-free and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores and contribute to even more breakouts.

Here are the sunscreens Lee most commonly recommends to her patients. And always remember, regardless of the products you select, you must re-apply them at least every 90 minutes to ensure maximum protection.
